Replace it: Replace your buttermilk and curd with kefir in your favourite Chaas, lassi and raita recipes.

Add it: Simply add the kefir to your morning cereal and dribble a dash of honey for extra sweetness.

Mix it: Add your favourite natural sweetener; 1 tablespoon of honey, powdered jaggery or any fresh fruit jam and mix well.


Blend it: A healthy hearty smoothie = 1 cup kefir + ½ cup chopped fruits + 1 tablespoon nuts or seeds + ½ teaspoon to 1 teaspoon of your favorite spice or herb to give it a kick + natural sweetener (optional).



Follow the sourness radar

I love sour – Try kefir with fruits that are already tart like mangos, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries etc.

I don’t mind sour - Subtle flavoured fruits like musk melon, apples, pears will keep your kefir tasting neutral giving you just enough tang.

Sourness makes me squint! - If you want to cut the sourness add fatty fruits. Banana is the boss if this; a close second are chikoo, avocado and papaya.

 TIP: Freeze orange segments, grapes OR watermelon pieces and blend your favourite frozen fruit with the kefir. Drink immediately! 

What does not work? Kiwi and pineapple. It makes the kefir too bitter.

 Nuts and seeds

I love sour - Sesame paste – Tahini? Yeah Habibi! I love tahini in almost everything, and smoothies make no exception. It gives it a buttery texture and delicate roasted sesame flavour.

I don’t mind sour - Peanut… Butter? Yup, preferably organic; but peanut butter makes your smoothie that much more nutty and fun.

Sour makes me squint! - Flaxseed powder! Get your Omega 3 goodness! It makes your smoothie thick and earthy and fills you up for hours. Not to mention its high Omega 3 content is an added bonus to this muddy goodness.

Who’s your favourite NUT? Cashew, pistachio, almond, take your pick and blend it in. All nuts help cut the tartness and give kefir more body.

Herbs and Spices

I love sour - Ginger! Oh la la. Take the sourness to another level; take the alkalisation over the roof!

I don’t mind sour - A pinch of Cinnamon powder in a banana walnut kefir smoothie will remind you of pie! Who said comfort food can’t be healthy.

Or try mint leaves - Don’t blend them in too much, but just enough to get the minty juices flowing.

Sour makes me squint! - Vanilla pod – kefir blended with vanilla, ice and honey and you’re drinking a vanilla sorbet!

Natural Sweeteners

Raw honey, organic jiggery, rehydrated dried figs, dates and raisins.

MO’s Green Smoothie:

A great meal replacer –

·       1 cup kefir

·       1 cup fresh clean spinach

·       ½ banana

·       1 level tablespoon flax-powder

·       1 peeled and cleaned cucumber

·       1 medjool date as a sweetener (optional)

> Blend it to bits! The key to a good green smoothie is to keep the blender going for over a minute to get a nice emulsified creamy texture.
